It was inevitable that there was going to be multiple rounds between Senator Bob Corker and President Donald Trump. Trump was gonna continue his attack because he’s..well….Trump and Senator Corker is in a unique position because he’s not seeking re-election. These two facts mean neither man has to bow to conventional norms so this could interesting. We talked about the Corker/Trump Twitter feud yesterday. It appears that for round 2 more conventional methods are being utilized. Senator Bob Corker talked with New York Times and didn’t hold anything back…
Senator Bob Corker, the Republican chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, charged in an interview on Sunday that President Trump was treating his office like “a reality show,” with reckless threats toward other countries that could set the nation “on the path to World War III.”
In an extraordinary rebuke of a president of his own party, Mr. Corker said he was alarmed about a president who acts “like he’s doing ‘The Apprentice’ or something.”
“He concerns me,” Mr. Corker added. “He would have to concern anyone who cares about our nation.”
Corker is not saying anything that we haven’t heard before. However, usually comments this harsh are coming from either elected Democrats or political pundits. No sitting Republican has ever been this critical of Trump on record. The same problems for Trump that we discussed yesterday still apply. He needs to be securing votes for tax reform now not driving them away. This is not only going to make tax reform less likely to pass it also means that the debt ceiling/spending fights in December are going to be that much more volatile.
The big question this morning is how does President Donald Trump? Obviously, a tweetstorm around 7 am is most likely. Would this still be considered round 2 or will we be onto round 3?
